La Comisión Europea acusa a Meta de diseñar Instagram y Facebook para fomentar la adicción entre los usuarios

La Comisión Europea acusa a Meta por el diseño adictivo de sus plataformas
La Comisión Europea ha hecho públicas sus acusaciones contra Meta, la empresa matriz de Instagram y Facebook, por el diseño adictivo de sus plataformas. Según el Ejecutivo de la UE, la investigación se ha centrado en características como el scroll infinito, la reproducción automática de videos, las notificaciones constantes y los sistemas de recomendación hiperpersonalizados. Estas características, según la Comisión, contravienen el reglamento de servicios digitales (DSA). La acusación sugiere que Meta no ha evaluado de manera adecuada los riesgos que su diseño representa para el bienestar físico y mental de los usuarios, especialmente de los menores y colectivos vulnerables.
Bruselas sostiene que elementos como el scroll infinito y las recomendaciones personalizadas fomentan hábitos poco saludables y un uso compulsivo de las aplicaciones. Los expertos de la Comisión han encontrado que Meta ha ignorado la información sobre el tiempo que los menores pasan en sus plataformas y cómo la optimización de sus formatos, como reels e historias, podría contribuir a un uso excesivo y perjudicial de los servicios. Ante esta situación, la Comisión Europea ha solicitado a Meta que modifique el diseño de sus aplicaciones, proponiendo la desactivación por defecto de funciones que promueven la adicción, como la reproducción automática y el scroll infinito.
Las conclusiones presentadas por la Comisión son preliminares y no anticipan el resultado final de la investigación. Meta tiene ahora la oportunidad de ejercer su derecho de defensa y presentar sus argumentos. Sin embargo, si se confirman las conclusiones actuales, la Comisión podría imponer una multa de hasta el 6% de la facturación global de la empresa durante un año, además de exigir los cambios solicitados. Este no es un caso aislado; anteriormente, la Comisión también había señalado a otras grandes empresas tecnológicas, como TikTok, por sus diseños adictivos que suponen un riesgo para el bienestar mental de los usuarios más jóvenes.
