Jes Staley, ex CEO de Barclays, comparecerá ante el Congreso por su relación con Jeffrey Epstein

El ex-CEO de Barclays, Jes Staley, se presenta en el tribunal de Londres el 14 de marzo de 2025, donde desafía su prohibición de trabajar en el sector financiero del Reino Unido debido a sus vínculos con Jeffrey Epstein. Staley ha accedido a ser entrevistado por el Comité de Supervisión y Reforma del Gobierno de la Cámara de Representantes de EE. UU. el 23 de julio, según confirma un portavoz del panel.

La invitación para esta entrevista fue extendida por el presidente del Comité, el republicano James Comer, hace tres semanas. Este comité ha estado realizando una serie de entrevistas con figuras destacadas sobre Epstein, incluyendo a ex presidentes y secretarios de Estado, reflejando así la relevancia de este caso en la política estadounidense contemporánea.

Staley, quien fue amigo de Epstein, había sido un cliente importante de las divisiones de gestión patrimonial y de activos de JPMorgan cuando Staley estaba al mando. Epstein, conocido por su condena por delitos sexuales, falleció en agosto de 2019 en circunstancias controvertidas, lo que ha suscitado un intenso debate sobre la implicación de diversas personalidades y entidades en su red de operaciones.

Implicaciones para el sector financiero

En 2023, JPMorgan acordó pagar 290 millones de dólares para resolver una demanda que alegaba que el banco había facilitado el tráfico sexual a través de Epstein. Este acuerdo se suma a un pago de 75 millones de dólares que la entidad realizó para cerrar otra demanda presentada por el gobierno de las Islas Vírgenes de EE. UU. A pesar de estos acuerdos, JPMorgan no ha admitido ninguna irregularidad en sus relaciones con Epstein.

El proceso de Staley, quien fue CEO de Barclays desde octubre de 2015 hasta su dimisión a finales de 2021, ha estado marcado por una investigación del organismo regulador británico, la Autoridad de Conducta Financiera (FCA), sobre cómo había caracterizado su relación con Epstein. Esta investigación culminó en una multa de más de 2 millones de dólares y en una prohibición permanente para ocupar un puesto de gestión en el sector financiero.

Barclays, en su defensa, aseguró que la investigación no concluía que Staley hubiera sido consciente de los delitos de Epstein, un punto crucial que subraya la complejidad de las relaciones en el ámbito financiero y la falta de claridad en las regulaciones que rigen estas interacciones. Staley, reflexionando sobre su relación con Epstein, ha expresado su arrepentimiento, reconociendo que no conocía la verdadera naturaleza de su amigo.
